RALLY FOR HUMAN RIGHTS:
An international team of athletes ran 250 miles from the Statue of Liberty to the nation’s capital in June 2000 to convey support for America taking a stand against religious discrimination and human rights violations in Western Europe. Organized by the Church of Scientology International’s Human Rights Office and the Foundation for Religious Tolerance, the runners, from France, Germany, South Africa, Central America and the United States, obtained thousands of signatures on a “Proclamation of Peace 2000” which calls upon U.S. government and spiritual leaders to demand governments in Europe “uphold, in deeds as well as words, the Declaration of Human Rights and dialogue with religious and ethnic minorities to resolve issues.”

Upholding accepted standards

A consensus among all who participated in the hearing was the necessity for dialogue to resolve real or perceived problems with minority religions.

Equally important is the necessity of adhering to the standards set forth in human rights conventions to which each of the countries discussed in the hearing are signatories.

“I want to emphasize that the standard applied to these countries by the United States is a standard that they have accepted,” stated Ambassador Seiple. “All of them embrace the international instruments that protect freedom of religion and conscience, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the European Convention on Human Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.”
