Freedom Exposé

Gone Off the Rails

America’s vital infrastructure is speeding toward obsolete. Years of inadequate, stopgap funding measures have left the country with a patchwork of quick fixes—and the ongoing neglect comes with a rising cost in both dollars and lives. The 33rd temporary extension of the Highway Trust Fund, which supplies federal dollars for maintenance of surface infrastructure, expires in less than a month, and the U.S. Department of Transportation says even if it’s renewed at current levels the fund will go bankrupt in September. And so the question falls to Congress: Can we stop this train?

Editorial

Battle of Wits

Political correctness is the rule of the day, and it reigns like a dictator. The insurgent invites harsh lashes from this tyrant: 10 of ‘em for the very idea, and 10 more for presenting it well.

News Briefs

News Briefs

A contentious Congressional battle over the Trans-Pacific Partnership moved forward in late June when TPP advocates garnered the votes in both the House and Senate to grant President Barack Obama so-called ‘fast track’ authority on the controversial 12-nation trade agreement. Passage of Trade Promotion Authority (a.k.a. fast track) didn’t authorize the secretive trade deal per se, but it means that Congress will have only the option to vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on the TPP, with no ability to amend the agreement.

Media & Ethics

Spin Cycle

Donald Rumsfeld, certainly not an oratorical jockey, in 2002 told reporters: “There are also unknown unknowns—the ones we don’t know we don’t know.” The then-Secretary of Defense, in his jihad against the English language, was spinning government hawks’ claims that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. Rummy was dreadfully and lethally wrong.

Front Page

We All Fall Down

Infrastructure refers to the physical components of systems that power a modern, industrial nation and provide the commodities and services that maintain standard-of-living conditions in a society—roads, bridges, tunnels, water supply, sewers, electrical grids, telecommunications, etc.

Profile

Engineering History. Arthur Powell Davis

In 1917, a year before World War I ended, Southern California’s Imperial Irrigation District sent a young lawyer named Phil Swing to Washington to urge Congress and the Department of the Interior (DOI) to build a canal that would deliver water from the Colorado River to the Imperial Valley bordering Arizona and Mexico, one of the nation’s driest regions.

Technology

Coin Trick

Take Bitcoin. The world’s first digital currency eased onto the scene in 2009 as quietly as a quarter hitting a carpeted floor.

Perspective

On Vet Unemployment: Mark and Tori Baird

Eleven years ago, Mark and Tori Baird sank much of their life savings into a project to help veterans down on their luck. HirePatriots.com began as a one-day job board that San Diego residents used to hire local Marines.

Into the Field

South Africa is Not Working

Recent mob violence against immigrants to South Africa is regrettable, tragic and without a simple explanation.

Abuse vs. Prevention

We’ve always known that people drink, smoke and use illegal drugs. But we’ve never known just how rampant the abuse—until now.

L. Ron Hubbard essay

Safeguard and Improve Your Environment

The idea that one has a share in the planet and that one can and should help care for it may seem very large and, to some, quite beyond reality. But today what happens on the other side of the world, even so far away, can effect what happens in your own home.

What is Scientology?

The Analytical Mind

Every moment of your life, your mind is recording everything that’s happening to you. Every sight. Every sound. Every taste. Smell. Pain. Emotion. Touch. Everything.
